The Eastern She-Oak Skink (Cyclodomorphus michaeli) Australian endangered species represented in this artwork is a species of lizard found in eastern Australia, and is an important part of Aboriginal folklore in the region. The Yuin people of South Coast New South Wales) tell in their stories how the skink is associated with the creation of the mountains and the valleys. The skink's ability to shed its tail (a defense mechanism) and is able to regrow it again is seen as a symbol of renewal and regeneration. I. Bundjalung country in the region of Northern New South Wales the skink is associated with the spirit world and is believed to have helped create the rivers and streams of the region. If you are wonderi g as to the origins of its name, the skink's scaly skin is said to represent the rough bark of the She-Oak tree! The skunks ability to blend in with its surroundings is seen as a symbol of adaptability and resilience also.
