Did you know that the animal featured in this artwork, the Leadbeater’s Possum, is an Australian threatened species? The Leadbeater's possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri) is a small, nocturnal marsupial native to Australia. The Leadbeater's possum is considered a sacred animal in the Kulin nation which is the Melbourne region. It is known to be associated with the creation story and the spirit world. In the Dja Dja Wurrung culture which is in central Victoria, the possum is seen as a symbol of family, community, and connection to country. In some Aboriginal stories, the possum is said to have created the stars in the night sky, or to have been sent to earth as a messenger from the spirits. The possum's ability to survive in the forest and its nocturnal habits are seen as a symbol of resilience and adaptability. All of these folkloric beliefs make this animal a wonderful and rich subject for an artwork such as this!

The artwork was created with  a mixture of ink and fineliner pens on the finest quality Archers watercolour paper.

During this time, she created more than 60 artworks, including 30 pieces featuring endangered species. Among these works is this piece showcasing an endangered species. The original watercolour was painted on 100% cotton paper using the highest quality watercolours available.
