The Eltham Copper Butterfly (Paralucia pyrodiscus) is an endangered species of butterfly found in the forests of Victoria, Australia, and is an important part of Aboriginal folklore in the region. The Wurundjeri people in the Melbourne area tells the story of the butterfly I. association with the creation of the Yarra River and the land around it. The butterfly's copper wings are said to have created the river's golden sand. The butterfly is seen as a symbol of transformation, renewal, and regeneration not only in Aboriginal cultures bit the rest of the world, reflected in its life cycle from caterpillar to winged adult. The butterfly's bright copper wings are also said to represent the sun and the life-giving properties of fire in aboriginal folklore. In some Aboriginal stories, the butterfly is associated with the Seven Sisters, a group of stars in the night sky, and is said to have helped them escape from a lustful spirit.
